Overview

Here at Kingsway Community Primary School, we provide a creative curriculum based around the   Maestro Curriculum,  a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children.  This is enhanced with Power of Reading which uses quality children’s literature and creative teaching approaches to develop a high-quality literacy curriculum and foster a whole school love of reading and writing.

The Maestro Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our curriculum will be delivered through termly projects which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning.

We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Maestro also provides a rigorous essential skills and knowledge framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs.

English at Kingsway

At Kingsway, we are excited to be using the Power of Reading to deepen and enhance our children’s love of reading and to give them purposeful reasons to write. The Power of Reading is about teaching Literacy through using high quality books and creative teaching approaches such as art and drama. This approach is undertaken in every year group from Reception to Year 6; engaging and motivating children in their English learning. It also enables children to deepen their understanding of texts, broaden their vocabulary and provides a meaningful context for writing
Maths at Kingsway

At Kingsway Community Primary School, we are incredibly excited to be implementing a 'Mastery' approach to our curriculum.

The Mathematics Mastery approach has three key principles: deep understanding, mathematical thinking and mathematical language, with problem solving at the heart of our curriculum.

The Mathematics Mastery curriculum is cumulative - each school year begins with a focus on the concepts and skills that have the most connections, which are then applied and connected throughout the school year to consolidate learning. This gives pupils the opportunity to ‘master maths’; by using previous learning throughout the school year, meaning that they are able to develop mathematical fluency and conceptual understanding. Our lessons are designed to give children the chance to use resources and aids to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract concepts while teaching children a range of strategies to tackle the same problem. At Kingsway, our expectation is that every child has the ability and potential to succeed at mathematics and we aim to embed a lifelong enjoyment of mathematics into all pupils.
